Ottagi are intelligent, semi-aquatic creatures commonly found around Makai. While many ottagi thrive in the wild oceans and rivers, they often form bonds with Islanders and adapt easily to village life. They tend to be curious, spirited, cunning, and creative. They often enjoy expressing themselves artistically, foraging for precious trinkets, and engaging in all manner of play!

Species Breakdown

Generally, ottagi closely resemble otters and other mustelids. Standard ottagi are around the size of a house-cat, though their size and body type can vary. Traits and mutations can further differentiate them beyond their standard form. Ottagi do not display any sexual dimorphism and can assume any gender. They are omnivorous, enjoying a varied diet of seafood, fruits, and plants, and some even have a taste for Islander cuisine!

  View all traits

Head

A round, flattened head and small ears help streamline their body. Their sensitive nose and whiskers act as radar, detecting subtle shifts in murky waters. Ears and nostrils seal tight when submerged, while sharp teeth snag nimble fish and crush even the toughest shells.

Paws

5 webbed fingers and toes, including opposable thumbs, let them swim easier and handle items with dexterity. Smooth soles (not beans!) provide extra traction in slippery situations. Some ottagi sport hind flippers for extra agility while swimming, though they might be clumsier on land.

Body

Their elongated, flexible bodies and short limbs let them glide easily through water. They are equally nimble on land, and can even travel bipedal (plantigrade) for a brief time. Ottagi typically have short, dense fur and can be almost any combination of colors and markings.

Tail

An ottagi’s flexible tail is integral to their form - it makes up between 1/3 to 1/2 of their overall length! In water, it acts as a powerful rudder, and on land, as a balancing counterweight. Ottagi will also use their tails to alert others by slapping the surface of the ground or water, and can stun prey or enemies by hitting them with it!
